The Sacred Search by Gary Thomas

What if it’s not about who you marry, but why?

Cover of The Sacred Search by Gary Thomas

I jumped on The Sacred Search when I saw another singly twenty-something friend of mine reading it for fun, and it was worth the read! Just take a look at the thoughtful questions introduced from the beginning:

What if you stopped looking for a “soul mate” and started looking for a “sole mate”—someone who will live out with you the great purpose of God?  What if dating isn’t about finding “the one” but making a wise choice so you can better serve the One who loves you most? What if God didn’t design relationships to make you happy but to make you holy?

The Sacred Search, Blurb

I wasn’t looking for a soul mate myself, but I didn’t have the mindset of finding someone who could grow with me to serve God better together than we could have been apart. In short, this book yanked me down to earth with its difficult questions, and I’m all the more grateful for it. I never would have thought to consider, and Thomas doesn’t pull any punches. Here’s another one of my favorite quotes from Chapter 2:

Do you think it’s possible that the second most important decision you’ll ever make—whom you marry—should be based on Jesus’ fundamental agenda for our lives: seeking first God’s kingdom and righteousness?

Thomas, Gary. The Sacred Search: What if It’s Not about Who You Marry, but Why? (p. 24). David C Cook. Kindle Edition.

Thomas covers tough topics to uproot common misconceptions and myths with Scripture. He challenges you to reflect on what you believe and why you believe it, only to guide you out of it. Even though you may think you’re looking for your knight-in-shining-armor of a husband, what detriment is that fantasy having on finding a godly man? One may be right in front of you, but if you search by worldly standards, you may miss out and not even notice. In short, if you want to learn more about a different perspective on marriage, this is the book for you!
