The Peasant Queen, A Beautiful Esther Retelling

I would give this 6 starts if I could. The Peasant Queen is the first book I’ve read since Provenance that absolutely stunned me to tears. For context, The Peasant Queen is a medieval retelling of Esther and it is spectacular.

I knew the story would have some kind of “God placed you here for a reason” message, but Ashton Dorow made it so much deeper and wider. There is only one book I’ve read digitally and then bought as paperback, and The Peasant Queen is going to be the second! It made me not only cry but also reflect back into my own walk with God. Absolutely profound and spectacular. I have no higher praise to give!

Ratings for The Peasant Queen

Story: 5/5
Worldview: 5/5

Did I say The Peasant Queen was spectacular? It follows the story of Esther as a retelling but completely surprises you only about a third of the way in. That’s not to mention the ending! It almost felt like the miscommunication trope (which I despise) but there was actually had a great reason to not say the truth, so I loved it.

Worldview is really what astonished me, because Dorow held nothing back. Dorow goes beyond faith, and dives deep into how we can trust God and still have so many questions swirling in our minds. There is so much more but if I say any more I’ll start spoiling the book. I can share my favorite quote, however.

Overall Thoughts

In any case, I’m so thrilled that I got to read this novel, and it is 100% worth your time. Thanks to Sandra Lenahanley for the stellar recommendation! If you have any more recommendations, I’d love to hear them!!

Note: It did take me a few chapters to switch between the first person and third person POVs, but I get why it was done.
